After almost a three week spell away from Goldington Road, Bedford Blues return home this Saturday 3rd October for only their second home Championship fixture of the season against the Green and Whites of Nottingham (Kick Off 3pm).

Following a strong start to the season, only narrowly missing out on the road to both of the capital’s Exiles, spirits in the squad remain high with the players looking forward to a noisy welcome against a side featuring three very recent former Blues having moved to Lady Bay this summer from Bedford.

MATCH REPORT V LONDON WELSH

Bedford Blues put in an almighty shift at Old Deer Park on Saturday afternoon but left South West London with just a losing bonus point after a 30-24 defeat to London Welsh.

Two tries from the impressive George Perkins and one for the evergreen Paul Tupai - who was making his 200th Blues appearance - kept Bedford in touch, but three first half tries had already done the damage.

Bedford started brightly and thought they were over in the opening minutes when Tupai was bundled across the line from a driving maul following a lineout. The ref said he was held up but was playing an advantage. The penalty went to touch but the lineout didn't find its man and The Exiles cleared.

MATCH PREVIEW V LONDON WELSH

Bedford Blues head to the capital on Saturday lunchtime to renew hostilities with old foes London Welsh in Round Four of the Greene King IPA Championship.

Many people could be forgiven for thinking that the big Anglo-Welsh clash was taking place at Twickenham on Saturday night, but there will be just as much pride and passion on display at Old Deer Park as the Blues prepare to face the Exiles at their spiritual home.

PRITCHARD'S WORLD CUP DREAM RESURRECTED

“Just when you thought he was out, they pulled him back in...”

After being left out of the initial Canadian Rugby World Cup squad, Bedford Blues fullback James Pritchard has been called back into the fold and joined up with his Canuck teammates ahead of their next against Italy.

Pritchard was recalled to the squad by Canada head coach Kieran Crowley after Liam Underwood was lost for the tournament due to a knee injury that he picked up during the Canuck’s 50-7 loss to Ireland at the Millennium Stadium in the first game of the campaign.

ACADEMY TO FACE RAF U23

STOP PRESS - GAME CANCELLED.

The RAF have had to cancel Saturday's game between Bedford Academy and the RAF U23 XV due to player availability. 

The Scrum Bar is open and the Rugby World Cup is on TV all day;  Italy v Canada (14:00), South Africa v Samoa (16:45) and England v Wales (20:00).

TRAVEL NEWS FOR LONDON WELSH AWAY

Blues travel to Old Deer Park this Saturday to renew their long-term acquaintances with London Welsh on what is set to be a hectic day in and around the Twickenham with local, national and international matches in the area (kick off 1pm).

If you are traveling to the match on the Followers Coach, please be advised the outward journey will now leave Goldington Road at 9am, rather than the advertised 9:30am. The supporters coach will then leave ODP shortly after the final whistle with South Africa v Samoa and England v Wales screened live in the Scrum Bar on arrival back at the Blues.

MATCH REPORT V LONDON SCOTTISH

Bedford Blues tasted defeat for the first time in the Greene King IPA Championship as they went down 24-12 at London Scottish on Saturday afternoon.

Bedford put in a strong first half performance and went in 7-0 up at the interval thanks to a converted Pat Tapley try but the Blues would have been disappointed not to have racked up more points in an opening 40 minutes that they dominated. 

A resurgent London Scottish ran in two tries in four minutes to turn the tables before Pier O’Conor gave the Blues a fighting chance only for a Peter Lydon penalty and a Chris Walker try to put the game out of reach.

The Blues head to West London this weekend in relatively good health. Another bonus point win last weekend, coupled with an easing injury list mean they can keep all the squad involved and look to continue the improvements in their game.

With a trip to Richmond Athletic Ground on the horizon, Blues Team Manager Rob Crowle said: “We’ve been delighted with how the season has started particularly with our attacking game. We’ve scored some good tries and it’s given us a decent platform to build from.

NEW AND IMPROVED BEDFORD BEAR MASCOT

Bedford Blues were delighted to unveil the new Club mascot last Saturday as a remake of the former Bedford Bear, redesigned and manufactured to be the community face of the Blues and help reconnect with the next generation of supporters.

Launched at Blues match against Moseley with his extended family of Bedford Bear bothers, the new mascots proved a successful addition and will be at all home games and across the town this season.

Supported by Bedford School Sports Partnership, the new mascot was designed by competition winner Ayo Ajayi, from Newnham Middle School, who we welcomed and hosted in hospitality last Saturday.
