MATCH REPORT & HIGHLIGHTS V ROTHERHAM

Bedford Blues suffered a second Championship defeat in a row on Saturday afternoon as they went down 39-31 to Rotherham.

The game was full of tries - you can watch them all now by clicking HERE - with nine being scored in total, but unfortunately the hosts scored five to the Blues four and the boot of Will Goodwin ensured that Rotherham took the spoils.

Bedford took the lead in the second minute when Steffan Jones converted a penalty after the Blues pack proved dominant in the first scrum of the afternoon but it was to be the only time Bedford led in the game.

MATCH PREVIEW

Bedford Blues head off to South Yorkshire on Saturday afternoon for the always tough challenge of facing Rotherham Titans at Clifton Lane.

The Blues will be looking for a return to winning ways having suffered a first defeat of 2016  when they went down 18-25 to Jersey a fortnight ago. Games against Rotherham are never easy especially when the hosts will be looking to impress their new Head Coach Justin Burnell.

Looking ahead to the game, Blues Forwards Coach Martin Hynes said: "Everyone was disappointed with our performance against Jersey but hopefully it'll give the lads the kick up the backside they needed and we can all move on.

CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND 17 PREVIEW

Doncaster Knights made another resounding statement in the Greene King IPA Championship a fortnight ago – now they face a Cornish Pirates side that have been extremely resilient at home and are chasing the Blues as the season reaches a climax.

The Pirates have won three league games on the bounce at The Mennaye and will look to recover their form back in Cornwall after back-to-back losses on the road to London Scottish and Yorkshire Carnegie.

The Knights' own run, however, shows no signs of slowing down – now comfortably perched in second after their own success over Carnegie.

BLUES TO HOST SECOND UNDER 19 TENS COMPETITION

Bedford Blues will again be hosting a national Under 19s 10-a-side tournament on Sunday 24 April following the success of last year’s event as the Club help showcase some of the most talented young rugby players in the country.

The invitation competition proved a superb initiative last season with Bedford Blues Academy narrowly clinching the title having defeated Worcester Warriors in the first round and Nottingham in the final with their only loss of the tournament against East Midlands.

GAME CANCELLED DUE TO WATERLOGGED PITCH

The Blues Academy welcome Moseley Academy to Goldington Road on Saturday, KO 2.00 pm.

The Blues make a number of changes to the starting line that lost to Loughborough University U21 last week.  In the pack, Ben Thompson and Leon Patel-Champion return at prop with Charley Harvey and Callum Strachan at 2nd row, and Tim Herbert starting at flanker.  In the back line Max McMinn starts at fly half with Ben Phillips moving to centre.  Paul Aguele returns at centre with Jack Gibbs moving to full back.

MATCH REPORT & HIGHLIGHTS V JERSEY

Bedford Blues were left ruing missed opportunities on Saturday afternoon as they went down 18-25 to Jersey. You can see all of the tries on Blues TV by clicking HERE.

The Blues had started the game well as they raced into a 12-0 lead thanks to tries form Paul Tupai and Tom Griffiths, but the Islanders kept chipping away and got their noses in front with five minutes to go before running in a late try to wrap things up.

ACADEMY LOSE TO LOUGHBOROUGH STUDENTS U21 XV

Bedford Academy were down by 19pts – 0 at half time to an older, more physical, University side before putting together a better second half to lose by 38pts - 14.

Bedford were slow to start the game and the students played a more physical game to score three first half tries and lead by 19pts – 0 at half time.

MATCH PREVIEW V JERSEY

Bedford Blues return to Goldington Road this weekend as Jersey cross over the English Channel in Round 16 of the GKIPA Championship.

It may be Valentine’s weekend, but there won’t be much love in the air come 3pm as the Blues prepare to take on a Jersey side brimming with confidence having only tasted defeat once in their last five games.

Bedford are currently in a purple patch of their own having picked up a valuable win in the final minute of their encounter with Nottingham at Lady Bay last Sunday. Sam Blanchet’s try in the dying seconds was converted by substitute Jake Sharp to keep the Blues 2016 unbeaten record intact.

The Blues Academy travel to play the Loughborough University Under 21 XV on Saturday, Kick Off is at 2.00 pm.

The Blues make eight changes (two of them positional) to the starting line that lost to Wasps Academy last week.  In the pack, Charley Robinson starts at hooker, with Cameron Lawes and Jacob Moody in the second row, with Callum Strachan moving to flanker.  Reuben Pritchard starts at flanker.  In the back line Max Titchener starts at centre and Matt Shacklady on the wing.  Scrum half Olly Howard captains the side.
