MATCH REPORT V DONCASTER KNIGHTS

Bedford Blues first Championship home game of 2017 ended in defeat as promotion chasing Doncaster Knights racked up a bonus point 22-40 win at Goldington Road.

The Blues did take a bonus point thanks to two tries from Dean Adamson and one a piece for Tom James and Pat Tapley but after going 0-19 down within nine minutes, it was always an uphill task to get back into the game.

MATCH PREVIEW V DONCASTER KNIGHTS

Championship rugby returns to Goldington Road this weekend as Bedford Blues prepare to take on last season's beaten finalists Doncaster Knights.

Bedford started the week nine points behind this weekend's opponents in the league table, but with the expulsion of London Welsh from the Championship and all results against the Exiles being expunged, the Blues are now 14 points off the Knights.

When the two teams met back in September at Castle Park, the lead changed hands four times with the Bedford scoring four tries, but the hosts finally took the spoils 30-22 with a late score denying the Blues an extra losing bonus point.

BLUES LOOK FOR ALTERNATIVE FIXTURE

This week has seen a major change to the Greene King IPA Championship with the news that London Welsh have ceased to exist as a professional club after being refused permission to stay in the league by the RFU.

The Blues home fixture against London Welsh, scheduled for Friday 17th March, is now cancelled. However, Bedford Rugby Club are currently exploring all avenues to find a suitable quality replacement fixture on the same evening.

Currently in contact with a number of options, Bedford are confident of arranging an alternative fixture and still hosting a two-day rugby and beer festival on that weekend.

END DRY JANUARY AT THE BLUES THIS SATURDAY

Whilst the New Year seems a long while back, this Saturday the Blues run out at Goldington Road for their first Championship game of 2017 against play-off hopefuls Doncaster Knights (KO 3pm).

Two poor Cup results have left Mike Rayer’s men hungry for a good performance against a very strong Knights side, currently sitting third in the table after reaching last season’s play-off final and narrowly missing out on promotion to Bristol.

MATCH REPORT V DRAGONS SELECT

Bedford Blues British & Irish Cup campaign fizzled out on Saturday afternoon as Mike Rayer's men went down 15-12 to the Newport Gwent Dragons Premiership Select XV.

A disruptive afternoon saw the game being shifted from The Bridge Field at Bedwas to the Dragons' Ystrad Mynach training ground due to the pitch being still frozen in places and not safe to play. The kick off at the new ground was delayed to 4.30pm with the Blues travelling from 6:30am.

Bedford Blues have named their team to head to South Wales on Saturday afternoon for the final British & Irish Cup group game against the Dragons Select XV.

While neither team can progress to the quarter-final stage, Mike Rayer's men will be looking to put in a big performance before attention turns back to the Greene King IPA Championship season next weekend.

Bedford make a host of changes for the game at Bedwas with Michael Le Bourgeois, Dean Adamson, Myles Dorrian and Jordan Burns returning to the backs while Jacob Fields, Christian Judge, Paul Tupai, Ed Taylor and Josh Buggea start up front.

Bedford's chances of reaching the quarter finals of the British & Irish Cup came to an end on Saturday afternoon as they went down 12-29 to Yorkshire Carnegie.

Tries from Ollie Dodge and Tom Whiteley did give Bedford hope in the second half, but the visitors had been clinical in finishing their chances and were tough to break down.
