DUO PEN NEW DEALS

Bedford Blues have taken their squad number up to 31 after two more players signed new deals to remain at Goldington Road for the 2015/16 Greene King IPA Championship season.

Fly-half Steffan Jones and back row forward Josh Buggea have both put pen-to-paper to remain at the Blues for the new campaign.

Jones, 24, joined the Blues on a permanent deal in January 2015 following his involvement with Wales in the HSBC Sevens World Series. Jones first signed for Bedford in the summer on a year long loan move from Newport Gwent Dragons, but was recalled by the region in early November before heading off with the National Sevens Team.

Jones initially came through the developmental ranks at the Dragons and was on a dual contract with Cross Keys where he impressed during the 2010/11 Premiership season, making 24 starts and one substitute appearance for the Keys, scoring over 300 points. The Welshman is a product of Filton College in Bristol where his teammates were Taulupe Faletau and the Vunipolas.

Buggea, 21, was recruited last summer from former Premiership outfit Worcester Warriors, having previously been on loan to Doncaster Knights. The back row star was a student at Bablake School, which helped to produce 1974 British and Irish Lion Geoff Evans and, more recently, England fly Half Shane Geraghty, before moving on to Hartpury college.

During his time at Hartpury, Buggea played and won the AASE final against Oaklands College in 2011 before being called up to England under 18s in 2012.

Speaking about the signings, Blues Director of Rugby Mike Rayer said: “Last summer we had a big turnaround in players and it took some time for the players to really gel together so it has always been our intention to retain a large proportion of the squad while strengthening other areas.

“Steff and Josh have shown glimpses of real potential this season and will be even better for having had a season with us now. To have them re-signing for another year is great news for us and I’m looking forward to seeing them kick on and fully realise the talent they possess."
