For Bedford not to have come away with anything form this game was the biggest disappointment of the afternoon as the Blues went down 19-32 to high flying Bristol.

That said, after the opening half an hour, the Blues were lucky to still be in the game after the visitors had coming firing out the blocks to score three tries which thankfully all went unconverted by Nicky Robinson.

Bedford found their rhythm though with Eoin Sheriff scoring his first Blues try on the 31st minute before impressive youngster Aaron Morris crossed twice to see the Blues leading 19-15 thanks to two Jake Sharp conversions.

Goldington Road is certainly the place to be on Saturday afternoon to ensure that you get your regular rugby fix.

A couple of years ago a downpour of rain would have almost certainly put the mockers on any chance of the Blues picking up a victory but on Saturday afternoon they demonstrated exactly how to use the weather to their advantage as they came from behind to beat Nottingham 14-9.

Bedford’s kit man – and President – will have quite a job on his hands to get the jerseys sparkling clean in time for next Sunday’s trip to Leeds but I’m sure he won’t mind after the entire squad put in a hell of a shift to earn a very hard fought win.

Bedford Blues have bolstered their playing squad with the signing of former Academy player Tony Fenner from Viadana.

The 24 year old – who can play at fullback, fly half or centre - came through the ranks at Goldington Road winning Two National Colts Cup medals along the way. He played for the Blues against the Barbarians in the Mobbs Memorial match in 2009 before turning out for Rosslyn Park and helping them secure promotion to National One.

Bedford Blues return to Championship action this weekend and will be hoping that their league form in 2014 continues as they welcome Nottingham to Goldington Road on Saturday.

The year started with a pleasing win over London Scottish, but two defeats in the British & Irish Cup see the Blues looking to reinvigorate their season in front of their home fans this weekend.

Bedford Blues vs Nottingham

It was only on Friday night that I learnt that I was to be the Blues Junior Reporter – the Very Next Day! I didn’t know whether to be excited or petrified and probably ended up as a mixture of both. I arrived at Goldington Road good ‘n’ early in order to meet Sam – the ‘real’ match commentator. It was a lovely afternoon – mild and breezy with the sun shining on the turf.

Bedford Blues tasted defeat at home in the British & Irish Cup on Saturday afternoon but it was a cracking afternoon of rugby with both teams running in four tries during the afternoon.

Unfortunately, the Blues picked up three more injuries that they could have done without and the upright stopped a penalty and conversion going over in this back-and-forth game.

The Blues Academy lost to the Eastern Counties Under 20 XV, at Thetford, by 25pts – 19.  In a game played in 3 x 25 minute periods the Blues were 10-0 down at the end of the first period; they fought back to 13-12 down at the end of the second period, before losing by 25-19 at full time.
