Bedford Blues suffered an agonising defeat at the Mennaye Field on Sunday afternoon as the Cornish Pirates scored a late, late converted try to secure a 32-31 win.

Despite having to dig very deep in the second half, the Blues looked to be heading home with a bonus point win after Pat Tapley, Tom Griffiths, Joel Conlon and Mike Le Bourgeois had all crossed the whitewash with Myles Dorrian converting all four plus a penalty. But the Pirates pressed until the very end and got their reward as Alex Cheeseman scored from close range before Laurence May converted to seal victory.

Bedford Blues return to Championship action this weekend with the customary trip to Penzance as they face the Cornish Pirates on Sunday afternoon.

Games between the clubs are always hotly contested and league position will mean nothing when the two go head-to-head at the Mennaye Field.

Bedford Blues will have the privilege of hosting the first televised rugby game of 2016 when the Sky cameras come to Goldington Road on New Year’s Day for the Championship fixture against London Scottish.

The game has been moved back to 3.05pm to accommodate the cameras so that’ll give everyone an extra five minutes to recover from any ‘over indulgences’ the night before and make their way to Goldington Road.

Bedford maintained their unbeaten home record this season with an excellent 27-18 win over Ulster ‘A’ which keeps the Blues at the top of British & Irish Cup Pool 2.

Some fantastic running rugby saw Piers O’Conor, Jordan Burns and Steffan Jones all crossing the whitewash while Jake Sharp had an excellent day from the kicking tee as the Blues turned pink for the annual Ladies Day fixture that was attended by a wonderful 2303 fans. 

That’s not to say that the Blues had it all their own way and if Ulster’s Sam Windsor had his kicking radar as finely tuned as Sharp’s, then the result could have been a different one.
